Conservation and Community
We believe in holistic approaches to conservation and environmental protection, in which community livelihood opportunity is considered in conservation efforts. Community inclusion is essential in environmental protection; engaging and incorporating communities in the process of conservation planning ensures the continued protection of biodiversity, ecosystem services, and natural resources. We focus on community-based conservation, in which community is a main driving force behind protection efforts. The Sustainability Demonstration Center brings together communities and science through practicing open communication, facilitating the collaboration of community experiences and the merits of scientific inquiry. This in turn creates a powerful force by which community members have an active participatory role in environmental protection.
The programs we run emphasize this approach of participatory inclusion. Our aim is to serve as a means by which to connect communities to scientific knowledge and resources. We believe not only that scientific inquiry can directly benefit communities in environmental activism efforts, but that communities can be a driving force for inspiring quality science.
